Direct thermal printing heats coated thermochromatic material as it passes over the thermal print head. After heat is applied, an image is produced. Causing the colour of the media to change.

Thermal printing requires many components. A heat generating thermal head, a rubber roller that feeds the media through the printer and a spring which applies pressure to the thermal head.

When the wristband is placed between the thermal head and platen, the thermal head receives an electric current which then generates heat. The thermosensitive colouring layer then changes the colour of the thermosensitive wristband.

The colour change occurs from a reaction between a dye and acid which changes colour. A process otherwise known as thermochromism.
