There are two different types of barcodes. These include one directional & two directional. 1D is the most commonly used. These are made up of a series of lines of different widths. Data can only be stored in a horizontal manner. Barcode scanners operate by scanning a barcode. This retrieves product data.
There is another type of barcode known as two dimensional. This type of scanner stores data both vertically and horizontally. Furthermore, you cannot use a 1D scanner to scan 2D barcodes. However, you can scan both 1D and 2D barcodes with a 2D scanner.
How to connect and program a barcode scanner
When buying a barcode scanner, it is essential to take into consideration the compatibility of your device. Further, it is also important to consider how the scanner will be connected to the register. You should consider the compatibility of the scanner with the register. Consequently, some cash registers have to be set up at the factory to be compatible with certain scanners. The scanner must also be programmed to the system. This is for the reason that product and pricing information is linked together.
There are a number of ways in which a barcode scanner can be connected to a system. These include PS/2, USB and serial.

Handheld Scanners
These scanners are the most popular. Easy to use, they operate by activating a trigger on the handle. There are many models of varying price available. Omni-Directional Scanners
These type of scanners do not have a trigger button. Instead, they are freestanding. This allows the user to scan the product by passing it underneath the beam. They can be in built into a desk. Alternatively, they can be free standing. They are great for environments where a lot of items need to be scanned at speed. For example, in a supermarket. However, they cannot be moved. Scale Barcode Scanners
These scanners are multi-purpose. They also have in built scales. Undoubtedly, this makes them suitable for retail environments. Popular options include the PSC QMAG8102 & the PSC QMAG8502-S.
Cordless Scanners
These scanners are similar to the handheld variety. However, they also have in-built Bluetooth connectivity. They can communicate with a range of devices. Bluetooth is an international standard. It allows a range of devices to interconnect with each other. Popular options include the Metrologic METMS9535S, Datalogic DM100P and Metrologic MS9535 VoyagerBT.
CCD vs Laser Technology
CCD scanners function by passing red light onto the barcode. This captures the reflected code. They are especially suited to indoor environments. However, they aren’t as effective in bright locations. They are more effective for scanning small barcodes. However, they cannot capture barcodes from longer distances. Contrastingly, laser scanners are good at capturing barcodes at distances up to ten meters. This makes them ideally suited to warehouse environments. CCD scanners have one advantage over laser ones. This is that they have no moving parts. As a result, if dropped, they are less prone to damage. This contrasts with laser scanners. They contain multiple moving mirrors which can fail if dropped.
